Nyonya Breeze Desire at Straits Quay is the surviving branch of a restaurant that has shifted addresses with the city, from a modest beach house near the old Naza hotel in Tanjung Bungah to a shophouse on Lorong Abu Siti in George Town. The dining room here is bright, clean and fairly plain, with enough hard surfaces that it gets noisy when full, but the focus is the cooking rather than the room. Plates run through the classic Nyonya list – jiu hu char, kerabu kacang botol, acar awak, rendang babi, kari kapitan, sambal goreng and lor bak – layered rather than showy, closer to home-style than restaurant flourishes. At the centre is "Aunty Rosie’s food": recipes absorbed in a Baba–Nyonya household and now cooked day to day by her godson, Ken Thong.

I have visited Nyonya Breeze several times and find it to be an excellent venue for exploring Nyonya cuisine in Penang. A major advantage is their portion sizing; by opting for smaller servings, diners have the opportunity to sample a wider variety of dishes. The pricing is reasonable and aligns with the local average for Nyonya dining, typically ranging from RM25–40 per person. While the flavors are solid, I would categorize the food as a great ‘baseline’ or introduction to the cuisine rather than the absolute best in the city. Please note that the interior can become quite loud during peak hours, which may be a consideration for those seeking a quiet dining environment. Conveniently located on the 2nd floor of Straits Quay, the restaurant is easy to find and offers ample parking. Overall, it is well worth a visit.

We came here as part of a large group that gathered in Penang for a regional retreat, and it felt like we were treated like family to a Nonya feast. The food speaks for itself; homely yet distinctly Peranakan and cooked so lovingly that almost every dish delighted our palettes with its unique taste. By the meal's end, our stomachs were full and so too our hearts.

Absolutely yummy home style dishes. Curry chicken and rendang gravy so good we finished all. Not too spicy and not salty. Great for our taste buds.
